Life, Nature, Love celebrated in family-friendly event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Museum of South Texas History invites the community to celebrate Día de los Muertos from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 2, included in the fee for regular museum admission. In addition to keeping one of the most well-known traditional holidays celebrated in the Mexican culture alive, the many activities that are part of this family-friendly celebration make MOSTHistory’s Día de los Muertos event a rich sensory experience. From altar exhibits created by members of the community to honor their ancestors or friends who have passed away to demonstrators and vendors from South Texas and Mexico, the day is a feast for the eyes — and the stomach.
Día de los Muertos began as a celebration of the lives of the dead in pre-Hispanic Mexico. The celebration of Día de los Muertos is not morbid but is a festive time. Over the centuries it has transformed into a contemporary holiday that many Mexican families mark to remember their dead and celebrate their cycle of life. Festivities will include Mexican as well as South Texas artisans demonstrating and selling their arts and crafts, traditional Mexican foods and music, and children’s activities such as making papel maché flowers, decorating sugar skulls and face painting. Highlighting the event and on display from Nov. 2-16 will be the annual traditional Día de los Muertos Mexican Altar Exhibit.
Spend a day filled with scheduled presentations beginning with mariachi music, the ever popular Pedro Garcia as “Juanito Gonzalez,” a talk on the history of the Día de los Muertos tradition with a book signing and many cultural dance presentations. Event attendees can participate, learn and celebrate while helping to preserve this family-friendly tradition. Admission to Día de los Muertos is the regular admission price, passes excluded: $7 adults (ages 18 ); $5 seniors with ID (ages 62 ), students with ID (ages 13 ); $4 children ages 4 to 12; free, children ages 3 and under. FRIENDS of the museum are admitted free as a benefit of FRIENDship. The museum is located in downtown Edinburg at 200 North Closner Boulevard on the Hidalgo County Courthouse square.
