#AskAnArchivist Day

October 7, 2020 @ 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm

#AskAnArchivist Day, scheduled for Oct. 7 this year, is a day-long event that is sponsored by the Society of American Archivists. This event encourages community members to connect with local archivists by asking questions and learning more about how each archivist preserves historical materials.

Kelly Francis-Love, who has been the archivist at the Museum of South Texas History since November 2017, will answer questions about being an archivist on the museum’s Facebook Live page, www.facebook.com/mosthistory/live

So, what does that mean to be an archivistIs it the same as an architect? What are the job duties of an archivist? An archivist collects and manages historical materials such as documents, photographs, newspapers and maps. These materials are organized in a way that makes them available to researchers, and, in some cases, artifacts or references in museum exhibits.

“Lots of people say that ‘sorting papers’ sounds boring,” Francis-Love said. “It is so much more than that. It’s being able to hold a piece of history in your hands and knowing other people’s stories.”

At the MOSTHistory, Francis-Love also serves as the leader and supervisor of the collections team, which manages 3D artifacts as well as paper materials. The archives and collections team also manage records created within the museum, produce exhibits, consult with donors and assist with research requests.

“I love to think about an item’s origin story and what journey it has taken to end up here at the museum,” Francis-Love said.

Hear more about Francis-Love’s archivist role at the museum during the Facebook Live presentation.
