CHAPS presents “Just a Ferry Ride to Freedom”

The Museum of South Texas History invites the community to a special screening of “Just a Ferry Ride to Freedom” with an introduction featuring Dr. Christopher L. Miller from the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley.
This film showcases stories about the Texas-Mexico border and its connection to the Underground Railroad. Rooted in Pre-Civil War Texas along the Rio Grande between the emerging cities of Laredo and Brownsville, this film highlights mixed-race ranches in Hidalgo County and illustrates how culturally diverse Rio Grande Valley. Other practices of heritage and culture developed during this time, which continue to influence life along the border and across the U.S. today. Featured in the film are community leaders, ranchers and historians who find out how just a ferry ride across the border to freedom altered the course of U.S. history.
Christopher L. Miller is a professor the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. He is also part of the Community Historical Archaeology Project with Schools (CHAPS).
