Create A Día de los Muertos Home Altar
October 29 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Not sure how to set up a Día de los Muertos altar? Learn about the traditional elements of an altar with “Create a Día de los Muertos Home Altar” presentation featuring museum staff René Ballesteros and Anna Garrigos-Hervert on Facebook Live. This presentation is in partnership with Día de los Muertos: Los Muertos Bailan, a two-week program hosted by the City of Edinburg and Museum of South Texas History.
The home altar is a staple of Día de los Muertos celebrations, and it includes several elements such as water, flowers and photographs. Museum staff will provide key elements and their origins and significance. To provide visual context, the museum’s Margaret H. McAllen Memorial Archives staff will present the Mystery Altar, which incorporates the message of photograph preservation, as an example. This featured altar is dedicated to the unidentified individuals of South Texas, whose photographs are preserved in the archives photograph collection, and highlights the importance in documenting family genealogy and history.
The presentation will broadcast on facebook.com/MOSTHistory/live. The presentation will also be recorded and posted for public access on the Museum’s Facebook page and website at www.mosthistory.org.
