Panteón

Location: 1910 Jail

The panteón has several translations: graveyard, cemetery, burial place. In its context, the panteón is where the living meet with the departed on día de los muertos, or the day of the dead. There are many traditional ways to celebrate and honor those who have passed with favorite foods and drinks at the burial place.

On Día de los Muertos in the Oaxaca Central Valley, the color and scent of Cempasúchil invite spirits of the departed to return to their families. Out of respect, community members decorate the graves of those with no one left to attend their graves.

Community Altar Exhibit

Location: Courtyard Gallery

Community members will honor those who have passed on with traditional altars. These altars are built based on the loved one’s favorite foods, drinks and items. Photographs and a summary about the altar will also be available for viewing.
