MOSTHistory Happy Hour: Try On History
November 29, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
In September 2018, MOSTHistory kicked off a grassroots drive to raise funds for the Try On History Program. The goal for this drive is to raise a minimum of $1,500 by Dec. 30 to fund the creation of three early 20th century representational costumes. These outfits, which will typify the 1910-1915 era, can be used by educators for interpretation about the 1910 Jail after its reopening, or about the Magic Valley era of town development. As of today, 88% of that goal has been met. Won’t you be fashionably generous and toss a contribution into the hat? Your generosity and the museum’s historical knowledge will be a perfect fit! Learn more about this fund drive during MOSTHistory Happy Hour: Try On History.
MOSTHistory Happy Hour will include free beer samples provided by L&F Distributors and served by The Landmark Lounge and Ignite Lounge. Pair your beer sample with an appetizer prepared by Nuri Food Truck. Live entertainment will be provided by Redlight Lounge, an eight-member band. There will be several ways to donate to the Try On History Fund Drive, but one memorable way can include taking a historical-theme photograph with a friend! Your suggested donation will go directly toward the fund drive, which will help expand the museum’s costume collection.
The event will also include a presentation by Jennifer Saxton, head of theater production at UTRGV. She has long supported the museum by volunteering at Summer Nights at the Museum and other museum-related events. With the Try On History program, she had her class of beginning sewers create an entire set of historically-accurate bonnets for the museum. Numerous visitors have tried on the bonnets, even posing against a green screen to be inserted in a historical image from the museum’s archives. Saxton noted that the bonnets were an ideal project for her students to see every aspect of costuming, from research and pattern drafting to fabrication. Currenlty, Saxton enlisted several of her experienced sewers to work on the next set of costumes, a trio of colonial women’s outfits to be worn by staff and volunteers. Through the Try On History fund drive, the museum’s growing costume collection will help bring history to life for countless museum visitors.
And, for a special time, the admission fee will be $5 for those who RSVP and pay over the phone between now and Wednesday, Nov. 28, by 5 p.m. Regular admission is $15 and $10 for FRIENDS of MOSTHistory. This event is for individuals 21 and over. To RSVP, please call the museum at 956-383-6911.
