Shenanigans on the Rio Grande with Susan LeMiles

February 2, 2019 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Let’s have fun! Susan LeMiles, a local author, will entertain museum visitors with tales, bloopers and little-known facts about the Rio Grande Valley’s role in the American Civil War—with some details not “fit for museums.” LeMiles’ presentation, “Shenanigans on the Rio Grande,” will start at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Museum of South Texas History in Edinburg.

This presentation is interactive and encourages attendees to participate in role playing, which includes information derived from LeMiles’ research on her second novel set in Port Isabel and Bagdad, Mexico. The audience will then get to decide who is a thief, who is a villain, who wanted to be a “rock star” and play other fun roles—all which will highlight the historic background of the American Civil War. “I uncovered so many tales and insights while doing research for this project, that there was no way to incorporate all of them in the book,” explained LeMiles. “But, I get excited, and I just have to share what I found!”

LeMiles grew up in San Benito, Texas, and the historical fiction she writes reflects an insight into the region’s blended culture that is not exactly Texan or Mexican. Her first novel, “Touch the Mayan Moon,” is a romantic adventure featuring a migrant family’s struggles and triumphs in the Rio Grande Valley’s multicultural world. LeMiles also wrote the copy for South Padre Island’s historical brochure. You can learn more about her and read excerpts from “Touch the Mayan Moon” at www.susanlemiles.com or www.riobravobooks.com. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at The Museum Store.

This presentation is included in the regular museum admission fee: Adults $8; Seniors (62+) $6; Active Military $6; Students (13+) $6; Children (4-12) $5; Children (0-3) Free. The museum is free to the community Saturday mornings (except during special events) between 10 a.m. and noon. Those who arrive between that time will receive free admission to the museum’s signature Rio Grande Legacy exhibit and LeMiles’ presentation. FRIENDS of the MOSTHistory are admitted free as a benefit of FRIENDship and must present their FRIENDship card at the Admissions Desk.
