The Museum of South Texas History invites the community to “Coffee with the Curators,” an informal visit with the curatorial staff in the Grand Lobby at 2 p.m. on Sept. 20, 2015. The quintessential environment in which to start the conversation on the importance of preserving historical heritage, this relaxed forum will provide visitors with the opportunity to learn preservation best practices through an open exchange with curatorial staff members Curator of Collections & Registrar Lisa Adam, Archivist Phyllis Kinnison and Archival Assistant Melissa Peña over coffee and light refreshments. This Sunday Speaker Series program will include an introduction to the museum’s latest temporary display, “Caretakers of Heritage: Hispanic Families of South Texas,” in honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month and available for viewing in the Grand Lobby from Sept. 13–Oct. 7, 2015.
Originally started as one week in 1968, National Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15 and ends on October 15. This observation celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of generations of Hispanic Americans. The start of this observation and the 30-day period are significant because they include the Independence Day anniversaries of several Latin American countries. In keeping with its mission statement, the Museum of South Texas History celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month to preserve and present the borderland heritage of South Texas and Northeastern Mexico. The heritage of regional Hispanic families will be remembered during this year’s National Hispanic Heritage Month at MOSTHistory through a sampling of donated collections.
MOSTHistory’s newest display is a prime example of the purpose behind this unique program. The museum staff is not only a resource to the public for preservation information but the Curatorial Department is also a potential repository for donations of heritage materials. Every individual is the caretaker of their own heritage, and much of it is tangible through items including photographs, documents and objects. In addition to receiving tips on how to preserve these tangible items, the curatorial staff will also provide preservation tip handouts that can be used as reference materials long after this program ends. This Sunday Speaker Series presentation by MOSTHistory’s curatorial staff is included in the fee for regular museum admission. FRIENDS of the museum are admitted free as a benefit of FRIENDship.
