Community Awareness and Police Enforcement (CAPE)

Community Awareness and
Police Enforcement (CAPE)

Located in south central Hidalgo County, the city of Pharr, Texas was founded in the early 1900s and named in honor of Louisiana sugarcane planter Henry Newton Pharr. Today the city of Pharr has a population of more than 70,000 people – and growing – on just over 20 square miles and is a major port of entry at the U.S.-Mexico border through the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge. With a staff that also patrols on bike and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), the City of Pharr department entrusted with improving the quality of life by enforcement of laws, protecting rights, lives and the property of every person is the Pharr Police Department. Comprised of three divisions, the Pharr Police Department has also created several programs and units within each division that work in community partnerships to identify and respond to neighborhood concerns and needs, including anti-crime program CAPE.

The Pharr Police Department also networks with other cities and works in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies such as U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CPB) under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Unique to the Pharr Police Department is the location of a substation at the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge. It is especially advantageous that many Pharr police officers have grown up with some of the same challenges faced by local citizens on either side of the border. Officers Hernandez, Segura and Vielma have been with the Pharr Police Department for seven years, three years and 12 years, respectively. This Sunday Speaker nbso Series presentation by the Pharr Police Department is included in the fee for regular museum admission. As a participating museum in Blue Star Museums, all active duty military personnel and up to five family members receive free admission. FRIENDS of the museum are admitted free as a benefit of FRIENDship.
