Ranch Fest

Experience ranch life and culture during Ranch Fest through live demonstrations and activities.

Many things come to mind when thinking about ranch life: cattle, vaqueros and vaqueras, the open range, campfires, and food. During Ranch Fest, you’ll experience some of the traditional and modern ways of raising livestock, roping steer and enjoying meats out en el rancho.

The event will feature musical performances, hands-on activities for all ages, vendors and more. Bring family and friends to learn more about South Texas ranch life at the Museum of South Texas History.

  • Roping cattle with TJ Tijerina
  • Horseshoe making with German Coronado
  • Knitting and sewing with Armando Salinas and family
  • Wood carving with the RGV Woodcarvers
  • Leather work with Oved Zamora
  • Leatherworking with Jorge Gonzalez
  • Mesquite production with Cappadona Ranch
  • From 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., local snake handler Fred Zaidan will present South Texas snakes along with other pet-friendly natives
  • Los Liberadores and friends will bring a 19th century wagon and tipi
  • Buffalo Bill will walk around the museum grounds for photo opportunities
  • Community Historical and Archaeology Project for Schools, or CHAPS, from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley will identify distinct types of South Texas arrowpoints using a digging pit
  • The East Foundation will explain the process of preparing cattle cuts
  • Embroider a Flower with a museum staff member or volunteer
  • Paint Styrofoam cacti with a museum staff member or volunteer
  • Create your own cattle brand using a Cattle Brand registration form
  • Personalized sheriff’s badge
  • “Catch” the cattle thief—a game filled with clues and riddles
  • Book presentation featuring local author Patty York Raymond who will read “ABCs to Ranching” in the Mezzanine area
  • PaperPie, a local book seller, will have a variety of ranch-related books for purchase
  • Myrna’s Western CuTEEs
  • E&B Elotes will roast elote, or corn a cob, and serve aguas frescas
  • Big Cal’s BBQ will prepare a variety of barbecue favorites such as brisket
  • Peques Burgers will serve tacos, chili dogs and charro beans
  • Chili
  • Pulled pork sandwiches
  • Coffee by Kairos
  • La Mexicana Bakery

Bring family and friends to enjoy a day at the Museum of South Texas History Saturday, February, 10, 2024. Admission is $9 for adults; $6 for seniors, students and active military; $5 for children ages 4 to 12; free for children 3 and under.
