Sunday Speaker Series Online: La lingüística de los grupos nativos de Llanura Costera del Golfo de México

The Museum of South Texas History welcomes Martin Salinas to present “La lingüística de los grupos nativos de Llanura Costera del Golfo de México,” a Sunday Speaker Series Online bilingual presentation on Facebook Live.
The presentation will cover how, ethnohistorically, the section of this Plain or Coastal Plain, located between the Guadalupe River in Texas and the vicinity of the Soto la Marina River in Tamaulipas, has more than a thousand names of indigenous groups or ethnic units documented or registered until the second half of the 19th century. This was when the last survivors lost their identity as hunters, gatherers and fishermen.
Since the second half of the 19th century in this geographic region, academic specialists have, in an improvised manner, classified the native languages in their studies, creating a great incoherence in anthropological knowledge in this part of North America, especially during the first part of the 20th century. There are eighteen currently known linguistic samples of a total of eight different languages from this section of the Coastal Plain. Although there is limited linguistic material, a better geographical knowledge of the cultures in their different environments aids our understanding.
Salinas is the head of the Reynosa Municipal Archive and the author of the book “Indians of the Rio Grande Delta: Their Role in the History of Southern Texas and Northeastern Mexico.” He is known as the Municipal Chronicler of Reynosa due to his specialist research in ethnohistory and archaeology of northeastern Mexico and southern Texas.

El Museo de Historia del Sur de Texas recibirá a Martín Salinas por su presentación “La lingüística de los grupos nativos de Llanura Costera del Golfo de México” a las 2 p.m. el 27 de junio de 2021 en línea por medio de Facebook Live en la pagina del museo. Facebook.com/MOSTHistory/live.
La platica describirá como etnohistóricamente la sección de esta Planicie o Llanura Costera, ubicada entre el río Guadalupe en Texas y las inmediaciones del río Soto la Marina en Tamaulipas, cuenta con más de mil nombres de grupos indígenas o de unidades étnicas documentadas o registradas hasta la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Esto fue cuando los últimos sobrevivientes perdieron su identidad como cazadores, recolectores y pescadores.
Desde la segunda mitad del siglo XIX en esta sección geográfica, especialistas académicos clasificaron improvisadamente las lenguas nativas en sus estudios, creando una gran incoherencia en el conocimiento antropológico en esta parte de América del Norte, en especial durante la primera parte del siglo XX. Actualmente se conocen dieciocho muestras lingüísticas de un total de ocho diferentes lenguas de la sección de la Llanura Costera en cuestión. Salinas mostrara como, aunque contamos con un material lingüístico limitado, nos socorremos con un mejor conocimiento geográfico de las culturas en sus diferentes entornos.
Martin Salinas es el jefe del Archivo Municipal de Reynosa y el autor del libro Indians of the Rio Grande Delta. Se conoce como el Cronista Municipal de Reynosa por ser especialista en etnohistoria y arqueología del noreste de México y el sur de Texas.
