The Museum of South Texas History is scheduled to present during FESTIBA at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Friday, March 1.

The first presentation titled “Family Stories of the Underground Railroad” starts at 10 a.m. in the museum’s River Highway galleries. Museum CEO Francisco Guajardo and archivist Melissa Peña will describe the story of the Underground Railroad as it moved through South Texas and into northeastern Mexico, as told by family stories along the border.

At 2 p.m., Guajardo will present with Communications Specialist Tony Peña on “Dr. García’s Gold” within the exhibition in the 1910 Jail Cell Block Gallery. It is an exciting story and yet under told story in South Texas history that highlights not only a family that buried gold, but a story of unprecedented philanthropic generosity in the history of South Texas and in American history.

These presentations are free. Guests are required to check in at the Admissions Desk. For more information, please contact the museum at 956-383-6911 or email Communications Officer Pamela Morales de Hendricks at pmorales@mosthistory.org.

About Museum of South Texas History
The Museum of South Texas History is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. It is located downtown Edinburg at 200 North Closner Boulevard on the Hidalgo County Courthouse square. Founded in 1967 as the Hidalgo County Historical Museum in the 1910 Hidalgo County Jail, the museum has grown over the decades through a series of expansions to occupy a full city block. In 2003, following the completion of a 22,500 square foot expansion, the museum was renamed the Museum of South Texas History to better reflect its regional scope. Today, the museum preserves and presents the borderland heritage of South Texas and northeastern Mexico through its permanent collection and the Margaret H. McAllen Memorial Archives and exhibits spanning prehistory through the 20th century.
